I always assumed that when I got really good and grown up and got everything in my house just how I wanted it, I’d stop wanting to repaint and redecorrange my rooms. I should have known that no such day would ever come. My style continues to evolve and change and my love for creating a welcome and cozy environment for my family only gets stronger.
When you’re building a house or remodeling your kitchen or rearranging your furniture in your living room, it helps to have a vision. Which is why I love Pinterest so much. You can create a room online without ever buying the first thing. I’m hoping to do some official decorating of my downstairs living room this fall and I’ve been busy collecting ideas. It also helps to look at your inspiration boards and give your style some names. The more descriptive they are of what you like, the better. Naming things can be scary for me because I love ALL THE STYLES.
But if I had to give my current style a few words, they’d be eclectic, retro, modern, and cowboy glam.
{ECLECTIC}
No one who’s ever been in my house would question this. I’m quirky. I like layers of interesting things that aren’t really supposed to go together. I embrace this quality about myself and resist the occasional temptation to tame it. If things look too normal, I start to pace and get itchy and nervous. Maybe I just want my house to match the insanity which goes on in my brain. Or maybe my artsy creative bent is just part of who I am. Either way, I’m like the Austin of home decorators—I’m keeping things weird.
{MODERN}
I’m so drawn to touches of modern as a way to freshen up other styles. It’s so easy to do this with pillows, colors, fabrics, artwork, etc. The key to a room that feels like it’s been collected over time is to be patient and collect things over time. OR. Mix things from different eras and then you have an instant collected look.
{RETRO}
I loved watching the MadMen series. I wasn’t sure I even liked the show until season 3 and by then it was too late to quit. I kept watching, partly because of the costuming and my fascination with the 50′s and 60′s. I adore the music, the clothing, the colors, the more formal way of life, the manners, the decor and I could go on and on. I’m sure that’s why I love thrift and antique stores.
I want my house to have hints of that era—like a little nod to days gone by and my way of showing my respect and admiration for those generations before me when women wore dresses and aprons and families sat down together to have dinner every night. (except on MadMen of course, that blasted Don Draper!)
Nothing like Blue Willow and Fiesta Ware and something warm and tasty cooking up in the kitchen to transport me to saner times.
Nothing like Blue Willow and Fiesta Ware and something warm and tasty cooking up in the kitchen to transport me to saner times.
{COWBOY GLAM}
I use cowboy boots and antlers as home decor on a regular basis. It’s the perfect marriage of style and substance. You look cute in cowboy boots but they’re also appropriate shoe wear for wrangling chickens or horses or children. And perfect for gardening and cooking. I rest my case. I love this article at Southern Accents because I love decorating with others in mind, which is often what Southerners have tried to do. Making your house a place that’s easy to welcome others and is geared for to serve. What does ‘southern’ mean as it relates to decorating? It can mean many things—but here are my favorites from the article:
Have you ever given words to your style?
Why go to all the trouble to have words and to define them? Because every decision you make should reinforce your vision. From the floor plan to the color choice to the landscaping. This concept helped me so many times when we were rebuilding our house. .
And even more than that, having ‘words’ helps you to clarify what you are not. I love so many different styles of decorating and I’ve tried to force myself into styles that I am not.
Take the all-white beachy look. I love it. For ten minutes. And then I’m dying for color.
Take the simple, pared down farmhouse look. It’s one of my favorites. But no matter how many ‘Simplify’ signs I hang in my house, I’m not simple. I’m just not.
I will load it up with stuff and books and I’m never gonna change so my ‘words’ give me permission to be who I am.
Now, think about your words, the things that define you. Write them down and then make a list of things you can start to change or rearrange that help you (or your house) become who you are.
I’m partnering with Dutch Boy and five other awesome bloggers to help you define your style! They’ve made this super fun by making it a Pinterest focused contest with a giveaway.

Also love your style names. If you ever venture to Oklahoma you 100% need to stop in a little town called Armore (south half of our state off of I-40) and browse a weird little shop called Cloverleaf. Bring money, though. LOL
My style words elude me, I tried defining back when Darleme had a fun series on it months ago, this reminds me to try again. Good timing with the season change, hugs!! xo

Omigosh. My friend turned me on to your blog, and then I found your Pinterest. It’s like you were IN MY BRAIN. The paragraph about watching Mad Men for those reasons, not for the acting or story line … the love of the whole era of the 50’s and 60’s (we recently bought a ’59 split level!! aghhhh!!!) … Yet, I love pattern mixing, and modern curtains. My house, I feel like, is a big splash – a window into my chaotic (but really fun!) brain. So, I hate to say my style is exactly like yours, because no two people are alike. But, your style so closely resembles mine. Could spend years on your Pinterest! (Feeling like I’m starting to sound stalkerish, so I’m going to end now.) 🙂

I had to go with Fresh Classic. HOWEVER…I definitely love splashes of retro modern. It’s what I’ll call my secondary or complementary style.

Random comment: Edie! I tried your loaded potato soup last week, and my family LOVED
it! I even brought some along when my youngest son and I went to visit my oldest son
at college (1 hour 15 min. away) and he LOVED it, too. My husband asked when I was
going to make it again. Tonight, I told my family I’d be making cauliflower soup tomorrow,
and my husband asked if it is the “soup whisperer’s recipe”! Sadly, I said no, she doesn’t
have a recipe for cauliflower soup…..or does she?!?!
Thanks so much for the potato soup recipe; it replaces my former favorite potato soup recipe. 🙂

We moved from south of Knoxville last December to the great Northwoods of Wisconsin. We rented a condo for 9 months while we looked (and looked and looked) for a house that would suit us.
IDK what my style is. Is granny chic minimalist a style? I like antiques, hand made textiles, but don’t like clutter ( for me anyway, doesn’t bother me at all in someone else’s home). I have had a blast bringing my stuff out of boxes and cozy-ing up the place.
I SHOULD say I don’t like clutter unless, I have things strewn around for :
1. Bible study
2. Marathon cooking spree
3. Marathon sewing/crafting binge
Then it is not clutter, it is a work in progress.
Love your blog. Say ‘hi’ to the Vols for me! 🙂
