I’m over summer. Well, that’s not exactly true. We’re heading out on the boat today to meet some friends for a delicious (and greasy) lunch at a nearby marina. They make THE BEST homemade fries. But, after that, the dog days are dead to me. As a matter of fact, I’ve already started knitting hand warmers, in radical rebellion of 100% humidity.
I may even take my knitting on the boat in some kind of desperate plea to the weather gods to SEND FALL ALREADY. I stumbled onto this awesome yarn in Walmart and spotted a pattern for leg warmers (which I may shorten to boot cuffs) and hand warmers that knit up SO fast and are perfect for beginners. The book is called Learn to Knit, in the craft section at Walmart by the knitting stuff. I have a little video on knitting dishcloths on my blog that might be enough instruction to get you started.
I like knitting so much I’m thinking of starting a knitting club. In related news, I’ve decided I’m choosing Meme as my grandma name whenever these kids of mine have some babies. #nopressurekids
I’m obsessed with Lulie Wallace. She’s a gifted artist who lives in Charleston and does just beautiful work.
I have three of her prints in my house and I’m DYING for a painting.
She’s also got a line of fabrics, bags, pouches, etc. For now, I’ll enjoy my Lulie prints but I hope to incorporate more of her art into my life!
I LOVE these receiving blankets kits from Anna Maria Horner. Her fabrics are so wonderful and these would make the perfect gift for bebes!
I never told you about my weekend at Becoming. And now it seems like a lifetime ago. I’ll give you the cliff notes.
Paige was my roomie and then stayed at my house a couple of nights. We SO enjoyed the girl time. We talked a lot about mom guilt and mom failures, so I came home and wrote about it. Noonday launched their new fall line so check out Paige’s Noonday site and see what goodies you must have.
Ruth’s talk on Clutter Free Forever led me to come home and clean out all the closets in this house. Have mercy on my soul, is all I can say.
She and I both do this thing called Sunday Prep, where you spend a couple of hours on Sunday evening getting ready for the week. Well. I never realized how seriously she takes hers. You’ve got see this post on her Sunday prep routine. Can we just have a moment of silence in honor of this piece of well lived life? I’ll post mine someday just for fun. Hint. Her Sunday prep has a spread sheet. Mine does not. Hers involves making ten meals. Mine involves sorta planning 5. In other words, her Sunday prep is outta my league but I’m may just have to try it someday. And I thought I was an overachiever.
The night we finished the conference, I got to spend a wonderful evening with some of my favorite people. We laughed until I seriously thought I might choke. There was a fair amount of discussion about #oldladyproblems though Bri is a bit young to have to hear such horror stories.
(Bri, Ruth, yours truly, Kristy, Jen, Paige)
I also got to see Rhoda which was a treat!
Let me finish with what’s currently on my nightstand.
Wild by Cheryl Strayed (memoir about hiking the Pacific Crest Trail, soon to be a movie starring Reese Witherspoon)
Bleak House, by Charles Dickens (book of the month for my nerdy book club) (also, I LOVE these covers, designed by Coralie Bickford-Smith)
The Death of Adam, essays by Marilynne Robinson
Hope your weekend is full of good things!
xoxo

xoxox – I miss you and what’s worse is that you were in my presence, but since I didn’t get my Edie fill, it just makes me want more time. 😉

Yes! Bring on AUTUMN!!!!!!!!!!!
While in Michigan recently my dear aunt discovered I did not bring any reading material. She quickly gathered some of her favorite mysteries for me. One of them was Anne George. The book was Love Carries A Torch (Southern Sisters Mysteries) and it had me laughing so hard I was sure I would wake the other guests. I plan to punctuate my reading with this author just to keep myself on a happy keel.

My mother-in-law is a fantastic knitter. In fact, she crafts felted purses and sells them at a pretty good clip. AND, all her grandchildren call her Mimi. 🙂 I want to agree with the very sensible woman up there in the comments who said Sunday is the Sabbath because I have heard an excellent sermon series on that but I get my weekly laundry started Sunday night. But if it’s all sorted and stain treated, the rest of this family’s laundry is a cinch to have done by Monday afternoon. Now with three kids schedules to arrange and my husband’s, too, I don’t see how I could NOT do some kind of pre-week organizing on Sunday nights.

We spent the day at the lake today and it was hotter than hot. That was the last hurrah. It’s been the hottest week of summer and it’s just going to keep right on. I’m over summer, too. That prep sheet? Whoa. It’s a little scary to me. I’m glad to know there are people that organized. I’m just not one of them. 😉 Thanks for the receiving blanket link. I am preparing a list of things to sew for the first grandson due in December. (I’m Nona to my grandchildren. My mama is MeMe to the great-grands. Otherwise she’s Grandma.)

I love your Noonday necklace with your top in the group pic. Where did you get your top? The color looks great on you.

I agree with regards to the sabbath. It is the one day I’m free to not work and “do”. Spending three hours working on the very day I don’t have to so that the week will be easier just seems to miss the point of the day. Rest. Trusting in God’s provision like the Israelites learned when they gathered twice the manna on the day before the sabbath. At the same time, even as I’m convicted, I appreciate that we all have different convictions! Apologies if this is garbled. My phone is acting up.

Re:Knitting…My oldest daughter is a fantastic knitter. We moved her into her dorm room yesterday. It was a big day for all of us – this is her first year. She has already (less than 24 hours later) become friends with a group of girls on her floor because they all knit! I think you ought to start your knitting group…there is just something about working with your hands, especially with other people.

I have taken to thinking that our Christian sabbaths should be more like the Jewish one (since, ya know, they started the whole thing and all that): sundown to sundown. For a while, I was trying so hard to get everything done of my weekend to-do list before Sunday that I would crash into bed late Saturday night and be ill-prepared for worship Sunday morning. Then, too, starting the week on Monday morning without some prep time is not helpful. So, here’s what’s currently working for us: we have a “hard stop” on Saturday night at 7:00, to all watch the old Batman together. I have usually made something decent, which we eat on plates in front of the tv for dinner (once a week thing) and the kids will all be showered beforehand, except for our high schooler. Then after they go to bed, husband and I have some time to ourselves. Then, after Sunday evening dinner, I get to thinking about the week and do my planning – so I feel the beauty of the 24-hour rest, but in a frame that helps me focus on worship and the week in equal parts when I need to. Hope this helps,
