Is there anything that ushers in fall better than a trip to the apple farm on a cool, crisp autumn day?
So, my friend Tammy and I loaded up our kids and headed for Carver’s Apple Orchard. We had lunch at their restaurant—-with honest to goodness apple fritters (deep fried no less) and fried catfish. I’m really gonna need those fresh apples to keep the doctor away after that lunch!
And I love this huge sign on their wall–showing when certain apples are ready for picking. I may have to go back for a taste of the King David’s.
The apples always help to get rid of those pesky baby teeth!!!
And of course we’ve had to taste every kind that we bought. I like the ambrosias best so far. But the pippins are perfect for cooked apples, which we made last night as a side to our chuck roast and veggies.
And we couldn’t leave without snatching a few pumpkins!
Our plans for the apples include:

I agree that fall means apples! My daughter and her boyfriend are visiting next weekend and I plan to pick up some apples at the local stand and make cooked apples with breakfast one morning, apple crisp (my favorite), apple cake, and i found a recipe for an apple coffee cake that I may try. I can't wait. ;D I found your blog a couple of months ago and really love it!

Now that was a fun, fall, field trip! I've never had apple fritters. Can you believe it? But since they're fried I know they're fabulous.:)

I like to make apple butter and dehydrated apples. The apple butter makes a great Christmas gift when paired with a loaf of fresh (homemade) bread, and the dehydrated apples are a good substitute for fruit snacks.

That looks like so much fun! There aren't a whole bunch of apple picking opportunities here (that I know of), but its something I dream of doing.
As for what to do with the apples? Apple Fritters! http://www.thepickyapple.com/blog/2008/02/11/apple-fritters/

Wow that looks like fun!!! I make my granny's baked apples every year. She used to tell me the reason I loved apples so much was because 1. when I was a baby I cried all the time and she ran to the grocery store and bought me some apple juice and fed it to me in a glass bottle and 2. I was the apple of her eye, love her! Hope y'all have fun making and baking goodies with those apples!!

Hmmmm…this is the first I've heard about Carver's. Sounds like we might have to make the trek out to Cosby! So far I've found only pitiful apple orchards around here, and coming from 6 generations of apple orchadists, I can say that. š

LOVE Love LOVE to go to the apple farms here in Cali. Before I was a teacher I was a Kindergarten aide and we used to make applesauce in class. It was a bunch of cut up apples in a plug in deep skillet with a little water….simmer until soft and add cinnamon "red hots"….soooooo yummy! you should try it with your girls š Thanks for such a fun blog.

The only thing better than the aroma of something baking with apples is the taste of whatever it is you baked!
I was blessed enough to be able to take my 3 grandkids to the apple farm on Wednesday (their mama couldn't take them as she's been on bedrest since she hit 30 weeks – she's 2 days away from 34 weeks). I have made 2 apple crisps, a pie, and am wondering what I can make tomorrow! š

Hmmm…maybe we "need" to plan a field trip š There is a great Apple orchard near us š I saw a dehydrator on Craigslist and thought of you.
How would your girls feel about friendship bracelets all the way from Southern Ca?
My boys keep telling me that you are NOT my friend. You recently started a comment on my blog with "my dear friend" and I read it to them over and over and over š
Well, my sweet 9 year old saw the amazing crafts your girls are making while we here, follow little ones around and thought maybe your girls would like friendship bracelets š

apple dumplings!
Clean and core the apple (you can peel it too, if you want). Cut a frozen pie crust in fourths. Place each apple into the center of a fourth, then wrap apple in pie crust. (I used to make crust, but one year I wised up and just wrapped the apple in 1/4 of a frozen pie crust; it worked great.) It won't necessarily wrap perfectly, but that is okay – just stretch the crust as best you can around the apple. Before sealing the top edges together, stuff the hole (where the core used to be with a mixture of nuts – we usually use pecans, but walnuts are great, brown sugar, and a bit of cinnamon. Place a pat of butter on top of the nuts and brown sugar, then seal the top edges of the crust together. You might need to use a bit of water to get them to stick together. Bake (on about 400 or 425) until the crust is baked. Serve with ice cream.
Heaven!

Oh, forgot to say that sometimes we drizzle a bit of caramel over the top of the apple dumplings!
