During the quiet hours of morning, there is a renegade group of blogging women who are breaking into this Life in Grace. We come, not to steal, but to shower with blessing. And we cross our fingers and toes that sweet Edie doesn’t balk too much at us sneaking in without permission.
It’s been two weeks since Edie’s family lost all their earthly belongings in the house fire. Even as their things are slowly being replaced, we know the greater tragedy is to lose your sense of normal, of safe, and of home. As Edie has so eloquently shared with us, “a heaviness sets in that I worry will be my permanent friend.” Her local friends and family have done so much to provide for their physical and emotional needs over the past two weeks. As her friends in blogland, we feel helpless to do anything that counts.
Since our arms can’t reach, we want to embrace Edie with our words. We figure if words were good enough for God when he spoke the Universe into existence with a let there be, and then there was, they must be good enough for us. Besides, they are all we’ve got, and we pray that the Lord will multiply them and dress them up with love and lightness, directing them straight into Edie’s heavy heart.
Over the years, Edie has written so beautifully about home, about faith, about family and love, grace and books, silliness and food. She has created a home here for us, a place to be inspired, to be encouraged, and to be ourselves. We know you feel the same way. And while Edie sits in a position right now where everyone wants to give to her, we want to take some time to thank Edie for the ways she has given to us. And so we invite you to join us in celebrating this Life in Grace she has so eloquently shared with us. Here’s how you can join in:
- Write a post on your own blog about how Edie has been an encouragement to you. Perhaps you have a specific post she wrote that stands out in your mind, or a story of when you met her in real life. Anything about Edie and this beautiful space she has created here.
- Come back and link up below so she will have all of our words in one place, little image gestures of love and support from all over the country, even the world. Be sure to use the permalink for your blog post.
- If you would like to take that one step further, print out your post and send it to the address below. Also, if you read Edie but don’t have a blog, you can still join in! Simply write a letter to Edie via the address below and Patty will compile them as a keepsake

We do this because we love Edie. We do this because we don’t know what else to do. We do this because, though fire may have taken the house, it cannot take the home. Because home is Edie’s specialty, her heart, her gift she has made her home in Christ, and we know along with the Apostle Paul that “neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
Oh, and one more thing? Today is Edie’s birthday!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY Edie!
I don’t blog. So I hope a comment is OK. You don’t know me but I really enjoy your blog. I originally came because of all the beautiful photos of your home and family. I stayed because of your love of our Lord and Savior. I am just coming into a deeper commitment of Christ and your posts inspire me. You make me want to learn more.
You also inspire me to be a better mother. Your post about your family and home schooling really touch my heart. I love how you don’t just talk the talk but you walk the walk. You are an inspiration to so many.
I can’t even begin to imagine how difficult the last two weeks have been. So, hugs to you and I hope that the process of rebuilding your beautiful life is as painless as possible.

I’ve only joined your blog recently, so I don’t know you very well, however you have not been far from my thoughts as tears well up over your recent loss. I do want to wish you a most blessed birthday. May God turn these ashes into a beauty that only God has the power to do! Bless you Edie.

I do not have a blog but would like to comment. My comment is like the others, but I still would like to repeat. You are amazing, I stumbled across your blog and liked your style and flair but I loved your passion for Christ. You take an amazing stand and I am encouraged by your words and the grace that you have during this loss. I will be praying that you you will have peace and comfort through all of this. Happy Birthday, may you look back on this as a Birthday where God allowed you to see how many people love you and how blessed you are.

Happy Birthday Edie. Your family is the best birthday present from the Lord. Treasure and enjoy them. You were a stranger to me on blogland two days ago but now, I will be reading your blog and praying for you through out this year as you rebuild your home.

Edie,
Wow…I am speechless. I hope someday we will meet. I feel as if I already know you, through your blog and through your friends. The tragedy that you have been through is overwhelming to comprehend, and has touched me greatly. As a home style blogger, I know how much you put yourself into your home, and can not imagine the loss you feel, but God’s mercy and grace is sustaining you- I can tell! It is incredible how God wraps his arms around us and envelops us when we need it most.
I have read post after post about you from your blogging friends who are some I know personally and some just from reading their blogs. Ever since reading about your tragedy I have been praying for you and your family. I cried when I saw the posts about what happened.
Please know there are people everywhere who are lifting you and your family to the Father at this time. Isn’t it wonderful that the body of Christ has no limits?
Happy Birthday to you! I pray you can celebrate amidst the tragedy.
Love in Christ,
Denise

Oh God Bless You Edie and your family including your furry children as well. All I can say is that it was a miracle no one was hurt that fateful night! And I’ve always been one to believe that there is a reason for everything. We may never understand that statement or what the reason might have been, but maybe someday the peace will envelope you. I know you don’t know me, but every once in awhile I come around to read your wonderful blog and to see your beautiful decorating photo’s. I was especially inspired by your turquoise painted cabinets and you looked so cute peeking into them in one photo.
Life goes on and you will grow strong, I just know you will. I am so sorry this happened to you. I had tears misting up in my eyes when I read what happened. I feel for you throughout my day and say a prayer for you each time.
I hope wishing you a Happy Birthday isn’t too much to say to you at this time. All I can say is God Bless You!
Cate says
Edie, I’ve already made mention of you at my blog, and have spoken of your story to a number of my friends, such has it moved me.
Please know that you and your family are in our thoughts and prayers, all the way across the world here in New Zealand. Your faith and grace has always inspired and challenged me, and as you walk through this time of grief and rebuilding, know that you are also building a testimony that will encourage others and bring glory to HIm.

You have the sweetest friend at the pleated poppy. I just read what happened to you and your family and that it is your birthday today. I would like to say Happy Birthday and may it be a WONDERFUL day filled with many blessings. This was my verse for the day that I read….Whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely….dwell on these things. Philippians 4:8. Looks like you have lots of lovely, pure, true friends surrounding you, lucky girl!!!!

Sweet Edie. I don’t think we met at Blissdom last year, but I admired you from afar. I’m a little shy in big social situations and I basically knew no one. 🙂 Anyway, I love you, your blog and your amazing faith in Christ. You’ve inspired me more than you know.
So many have written beautiful words and I feel that mine will fall ridiculously short. Please, please know that my family and I (and our church family) are praying for you…so much. More than us praying, Christ is interceding for you right now before the Father. What a Saviour we have!
You are surrounded with so much love. I’m praying today that you will be able to celebrate the beautiful life that God has given you.
I’m claiming Isaiah 61:3 for you today – “To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that he might be glorified.”

At the risk of being the most superficial commenter here, I want to thank you for teaching me (through your pictures and words) not to be afraid of color! Your home always looked like such a wonderful, homey place to be in – not all beige and white like so many other houses in blogland (and many times mine, as well). I can only hope to be as hospitable and welcoming in my home and my heart as you seemed to be. Happy birthday and thank you so much for your many beautiful posts and words of encouragement!

May your birthday today be a blessing to you and as special to you as you seem to be to others. Blessings.

Happy Birthday Edie!!!!
I found your blog a couple of years ago when you were showing off your turquoise cabinets in your old house! I loved them!! I also loved your blog and thought it was really cool to meet a blogger so close to me, as I live north of Knoxville. I shared in your excitement when you purchased your new house and couldn’t wait to see what decorating magic you would work in your new kitchen and house. First let me say that I am so sorry for your loss. God has used it, along with a few other peoples loses this Christmas season to remind my husband and I that we are indeed very blessed and we have much to be thankful for despite our shortcomings. I have also been praying for you and your family’s safety, that God would provide for you and bless you all. From your recent post, it sounds as though He has blessed your family and provided beyond all expectation.
Secondly, yesterday morning somewhere between dreaming and waking, God was speaking to me and telling me to donate a few things to you and your girls. I don’t have much, but it was so profound that I felt I should immediately get in my car and drive them to you if only I knew where you were. I will send them to the address your sister provided in a previous post.
Thank you for making time to blog each day and write what is in your heart. I know how time-consuming blogging can be; I simply don’t have the time anymore but I wish I did. I have gained so much through the blogging community. Thank you also for sharing your journey as a child of God. It has been a blessing to read about you trials and triumphs; knowing that we aren’t alone, but that we share in each other’s burdens. Please know that we are all sharing this burden with you and that you and your family are being lifted up to the Lord every day. May God bless you and keep you!! Have a very happy birthday!!!

Ever since I read about the fire, my heart has been so heavy for you; reading your response to circumstance has been a beautiful encouragement. It is a tribute to the King you serve :).
Although we’ve only briefly met, you made a lovely impression, leaving me wanting to know you better. I’m not able to read blogs like I used to, so I haven’t spent much time in this space, but…especially after hearing such lovely words from those I know better, I wish I had taken time to do so. Hopefully our paths will cross again soon and I’ll have that chance!
Until then, you are blessing so many through your graciousness and countenance….to God be the glory!

Hi Edie,
I was just forwarded a link to your blog from a friend on Dec 29. It was the best thing anyone could have done for me. While reading your words I began to realize that I have been the most selfish, self absorbed, angry woman! Your words melted my heart in a way that I have been praying for. I have had my disagreements with God recently and while I’m still working on those, I now see the possibility of healing and becoming whole. ALL because of your words. I’m truly sorry that you’re experiencing such pain and loss and am VERY grateful that you and your family are physically unhurt. I pray that your emotional healing will be quick and full. Please know that I am praying for you and your family.
I hope that your birthday is full of hope, love and wonderful surprises!
Thank you so much for writing your story.

Dear Edie, Happy Birthday sweetie!!!!! I have just come to start reading your blog after a mention of it from another blog. I wish that I had been reading it for years. You are an awesome woman, one that we could all sit down with, enjoy a cup of sweet tea and an iced cookie, and lots of sweet conversation. I hope that this years brings you much comfort, love, inspiration, lip gloss and mascara, sweet moments, rebuilding, peace, restoration, and quiet times with family and friends. I have loved reading all of your posts, especially been reading your homeschooling posts and loving them. I just read your “Things you should know about southern women” post and cracking up. Never realized how much southern-ness I took away with me from my college years at USC and the few short years that we lived in TN where our sweet daughter Emilou was born. Thanks for writing that one. You will continue to be in our prayers and I continue to look forward to reading more of your blog. Celebrate BIG today!!!! We are all so thankful for you. Hugs, and blessings, Wendi

I was working a conference with 1000 college students. We were in the meeting room singing full blast to the Lord. My friend Kitty came in, turned around to me, texted “Do you follow Edie’s blog?” I didn’t. I do now. I’m so thankful for Kitty pointing me to this blog. Oh, what a joy to join in prayer with a whole world of unknown people to pray for a family we don’t know.
Thank you.

Happy birthday Edie. You are an amazing blessing to those of us that God has brought in touch with your blog. (Yes, I truly believe it was divine intervention the day I first read Life in Grace.) Personally, I want to thank you for so audibly living out your faith. You stand proud and tall for what you believe and the Master you believe in. He will sustain you and your sweet family over the coming year! He will provide.
Blessings to you,

Happy Birthday sweet Edie! I have been much in prayer for you and yours since I heard the news of the fire. Though we’ve never met in real life, I feel like I know you. Your transparent writing, your beautiful pictures, your zest for life and family and home–they have a way of sucking a girl in and wishing we could be neighbors. Your classical homeschooling approach, thrifty ways, and funky style find a kindred spirit with me. Most of all, I love the grace that drips from every word and the beauty that comes from broken. How I understand that all too well. Know that the prayers on your behalf will continue and here’s hoping that in some strange and beautiful way, you may feel richer today than on any birthday before. Much love to you!

So, I have gotten the infamous 503 error three times today on your blog. Don’t fret, it’s a good thing. It’s the error for way too much traffic on your site and confirms folks from all over the blog world are here to celebrate your birthday. You my darlin’ have gone viral!
Also a warning to those who have not read all the “birthday cards” above. Bring tissue. And don’t try to read them while sipping a diet coke as I did because that stuff burns when you accidentally snort it up your nose while trying to fight back emotion.
And as for Darcy, simply inspired use of hacking! There is such a thing as ethical hackers out there and today you are certainly one of them. Good on ya.

Your blog has been a source of inspiration and hope for me – during some of my worst days of 2010. I nearly lost my mom this year…and your words of faith and grace…they brought comfort to my heart when I couldn’t go on. For that – I will always be grateful.
And you have brought laughs, silliness, fun, and creative hope for my home. I love the possibilities that I find at every turn.
Your gift of words…I look forward to those days again…we will all be waiting with open arms.

Edie,
I only “know” you from a few visits into your inspirational life.
I aspire to be as intentional and full of life , the gift of life , as you.
I shared a “poem” on my blog the other day, and would like to give it you ,if that is okay.
I knew of your tragedy and miracle , and was thinking about a few friends that are suffering , as well as a minor in comparison situation of my own. The black coat refers to an old oversized down one we keep at the back door for dog walks, bird feeder refills, runs to neighbours with and for, and quick pj still trips to the school. My four daughters and myself all share it and it feels like home in a way. It sheds feathers , feeling like a nest and a nest in the making.

staying with the light
for edie
A sun can seem to rise grey, muted,
the frost
ashes
mourning the day
A long black coat comforts
Scattering feathers
A trail of bestowing
Breathing brume
And then it disperses
A blush
The opening
The song adorning
A day
love to you ,
and your family

Happy Birthday Edie. I know this will be a birthday like no other, but I pray that you are able to find joy and peace in it with your family. I found your blog through many places, mainly by our friend, Darby. Thank you so much for the words, thoughts, and wisdom that you share. Thank you for your honesty, humor, grace, conviction, love of family, home, and Christ, and posts of such thought, eloquence, and intelligence. So often posts (including my own) are posts of here are pictures of my kids and what we did today. I know your posts take time, effort, and consideration from you and benefit all who read them. I pray that God would richly sustain all of you during this life changing event.
Psalm 121
I lift up my eyes to the mountains—
where does my help come from?
My help comes from the LORD,
the Maker of heaven and earth.
He will not let your foot slip—
he who watches over you will not slumber;
indeed, he who watches over Israel
will neither slumber nor sleep.
The LORD watches over you—
the LORD is your shade at your right hand;
the sun will not harm you by day,
nor the moon by night.
The LORD will keep you from all harm—
he will watch over your life;
the LORD will watch over your coming and going
both now and forevermore.
Thankful for you and praying for you,
Lindsey

I discovered your blog today at Fly Through Our Window. I will be praying for you and your family. My childhood home burned last year on December 19th. My parents had lived in the home for over 30 years. I know the pain you feel now is similar to grieving the loss of a loved one. It is devastating, but just cling to your family and God will supply you with a home. I am following now and praying for you to have a New Year filled with many blessings. Happy Birthday.

So if I have pieced things together right (I have just been introduced to you and your blog) you are a lovely woman in Tennessee – a place that holds part of my heart since my husband was born and raised there and my first born son was also born there. I admire you and am inspired by your faith and courage – more prayers will be prayed in your behalf.

Edie,
For 2 weeks now I’ve prayed for the words God would have me share… I do not have a blog, however for, I guess, 2 yrs now I have been reading yours. It was the first blog I ever bookmarked:)
Knowing how you have ministered to me and so many others with your words, I can only think how God is going to use you to reach more souls that need Him. I am in awe of how our God works things for good everyday! How He answers our prayers in ways I could never imagine. Your story is wonderful and He is beginning another chapter and I, personally, cannot wait to see where He is taking you. Although I’ve never met you, I believe you are the woman that allows the Lord to work in your life freely letting Him use you while you give Him all the Glory. I cannot put into words all that He has showed me for your life. I can say, I am so excited to see what He does that ONLY He can do! You are a blessing and blessed! Thank you for all that you share and yielding to the Spirit in order to touch those that need His touch! Happy Birthday! May you forever be blessed.

I too have enjoy reading your blog. Even though my kids are grown I love seeing how you teach. Your spiritual journey, you have made me think. You are very intelligent yet have a very humble heart. I felt so bad when I read about the loss of your home. My sister’s home burnt to the ground the day after Christmas in 2006. She was burnt escaping the burning home. Why do these things happen when you are sleeping? Their dog woke them and his life was lost. Like you they had someone who wasn’t home (rather than was) and that was the blessing because they felt they would have had to choose who to “save” if both would have been home. I learned things from their tragedy as we all will from yours. Thank you for sharing so honesty because in the process we share in your suffering and that is a beautiful thing.
Happy Birthday!

Edie – I just found you through Layla’s blog, and learned about the fire only after I’d read your posting for half an hour. My heart flies to you – I walked out onto my front porch here in Massachusetts and sent you my love. Maybe if you take a deep breath today you’ll find that it reached you. When I think of the heaviness you are squashed under, one thing bubbles into my mind – you will be OK. You will be different, changed and you might struggle though this, but you will be OK.

Dear Edie,
There has been so much I’ve wanted to share with you over the last several days. My heart has broken a thousand times over for you and your family. I have been a long time reader and you became a constant, steady “friend” dishing out inspiration and wisdom. Although I have admired and loved your craftiness and decorating gifts, you have mostly touched me in the areas of homeschooling and parenting. I began my homeschooling journey this year with my five year old and over the last two years, your blog has been such a beacon of light, hope and knowledge for me. It was often funny because I would find materials of curriculum that I LOVED like WTM and TJED, and then found out later that you were using or had discovered too! Then I always knew I was on the right track.
I especially loved your honesty in the struggle and the self-doubt that inevitably creeps into a homeschooling parent’s mind. Whenever I had the feelings of “What the hell am I doing? Get this kid on a school bus now!” I would often go back to your blog for inspiration and soothing.
I loved when you posted about you and Steve looking to grab a beer after a homeschool conference. I think that may have been the first time that my husband could relate–“See these aren’t strange people–look how cool they are!!!” Cool people do homeschool! That helped bring him around!
That takes A LOT of guts and I hope one day when they are older your girls will look back and appreciate the incredible love and commitment that you showed to them. They are so fortunate to have a mama who was willing to take that leap of faith to put them first.
Everytime I start feeling that creep of doubt and that pressure from society that I should have a title, should go back to school for that advanced degree to give me worth or value, I come back here to be reminded that time is so very precious and it is fleeting. What matters is the now.
Thank you Edie for showing me that. I am forever grateful.

Edie, my heart goes out to you in the loss of your family home. I thank God with you for the safety of your family and your dogs. I work for a lady who lost their family home in the fires here in San Diego in 2003 and so I know first hand all that is ahead of you with replacing items, haggling with insurance companies, basically rebuilding a life, and one that is not the same as what you knew. It takes life and years to build character into a home and “make it home”. But thankfully you have the very most important components of what makes a true home….your loving pets, children, husband and JESUS.
Is 43:19 19 See, I am doing a new thing!
Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?

Your blog is such an inspiration in so many ways. I’m so, so sorry to hear of what has happened. I wish you a wonderful birthday and want you to know you are loved. I pray you will have extra strength and peace as you go on from here. Sometimes it feels like we have lost it all only soon discover we really had it all, all along. I’m 23 and had a liver transplant in September so these words come from my heart, from my experience and I KNOW them to be true. May God hold you and your family in His strong and entirely capable hands. My prayers are for you, and HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

Dear Edie…every one of those tears you have cried has been collected by the One who loves you higher, wider, deeper and fuller than our human minds could comprehend…He collects every tear from your cheek…the same cheek that He knit together in your mother’s womb all those years ago. He saw the ugliness of this hate-filled world and He came and made a way…He had to become the way and thus He is the Way and the Truth and the Life…and He knows the plans He has for You for a hope and a future…almost three years ago my precious hubby was in a bad car accident on his way to work in which he broke his neck. Twenty minutes before the accident I had stood at the livingroom window and prayed over Allan – pleading the blood of Jesus over him. Days later as I was “scolding” God I asked Him why he let this happen and He answered me so very clearly…”Satan meant to take Allan’s life…I drew the line of how far he could go and I set my angels right there on that corner and around Allan” and God Himself was in that vehicle- and long story short, Jesus did a huge miracle…two cervical breaks and a displacement and two surgeries, plates, screws etc….and Allan is NOT paralyzed…scarred, but living…God is here, in time with us and simultaneously outside of time…I pray He comforts you beyond words or human understanding….love, your sister in Christ, Becky

Dear Eddie,
I came across your blog, after following a link on Darcy’s, in the Spring, your blog brings the Papa’s light to so many, more than we may ever know. Over here in Ireland, I have been inspired and encouraged by your words. Thank you for blessing me.
I write at this sad time to let you know you are held in the thoughts and prayers of this Irish girl. Whilst there seem to be no words that humanly could bring comfort at this time, words are all we have; because without words there is a darkness.
The LORD is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit. Psalm 34:18
Papa God, I ask that you draw close to Eddie & her family at this time, and wrap her family in your arms of love, hold them close to you in a warm embrace, let them know that you bring light our of darkness, let them know that their tears are okay, that you collect these tears, and you will comfort them, fill them with your hope for the future. Spread your wings and let Eddie and her family nestle there safe in the love you give. Spirit completely surround them, be at their left and right, front and back, over and above – protect them and pour your soothing oil onto their heads and hearts. I thank you for Eddie and how she has touched so many people with her life, and her faith in you. I thank you Father that she and her blog are carriers of your presence, and through her you have touched so many lives. Edie I have a picture of a rainbow for you and your family, a huge gigantic rainbow, the full circle and inside are you and your family, may the colours of God bring you comfort at this time like the phoenix you too will rise from the ashes, and you will bring these colours of God to many many lives. Father give Eddie and her family rest, seal your love and peace into them as they slept, bless them and keep them, make your face to shine upon them and give them peace. Smile over them God and soothe them with your songs. I ask in Jesus name, Amen.
with love,
Nics

Message to Edie: You don’t know me; I don’t know you. Your story is all over and like everyone I am saddened and inspired by it. What can I do for you? I am not religious so I cannot pray for you. But I feel compelled to do something for you. My workplace burned down on Christmas day two years ago now. They rebuilt and believe they strengthened the community of employees by doing so. It does not compare, but there is a smidge of understanding those moments when you want to go get something only to realize that its not there anymore. Everything experienced builds character; especially the tough ones. Maybe people are asking you alot what you need. I won’t. Tell me something instead that you just simply want; that I as a stranger can give you and your family.
Best wishes

Edie,
You are an inspiration to me. Maybe because of your deep love for Jesus, Maybe because of your deep love for literature, C.S. Lewis, and schooling your kids. Maybe because of your tourqoise kitchen, Anthropologie bowls, and vintage aprons. Or your Minnesota connection– my former home sweet home. Or maybe because I, too was a physician (Peds) who laid down my stethoscope to stay home with my kids, and can’t believe I started homeschooling them. Whatever it is…I meet you each morning with a cup of coffee, and enjoy your honesty, your zeal for life, and your journey as God’s child. My heart aches for you. But already see how He will shine through you through this brokenness. Thank-you for sharing your heart, and your journey. May you feel God’s love and peace more than ever before. And Happy Birthday.
